Cabinet clears the way for the abolition of the router constraint

For a short moment it looked as if the Bundesrat would delay the law to abolish the router obligation. Now the Federal Cabinet has cleared the way for the law in a meeting on 07 October.

The cabinet has the concerns expressed by the Länder Chamber rejected and sees no further need for discussions on the law, which is also included in the coalition agreement of the current government.

Above all, the "technology-neutral freedom of choice" is an essential part of the law - not only DSL customers enjoy the free choice of router, but also users of cable or fiber optic connections. In the past, cable providers in particular were happy to cut back on the equipment provided and, for example, only enabled WLAN for a monthly fee.

The next step in the legislative process is the first reading in the Bundestag - after the grand coalition has a clear majority, a failure of the draft is unlikely. A timetable is unfortunately still not fixed, it is assumed that there will be at least a 6-month transition period in which the providers can consider how they will implement it technically.
