Samsung Galaxy A54 5G: affordable with compromises

As an experienced user of the ecosystem and a big fan of iOS & iPhones, in order to have a backup as well as an insight into the current development of Android, I started looking for the ideal device that still provides an up-to-date Android at relatively low costs. LingeageOS was not an alternative, the bootloader should remain closed in any case.

So my main criterion is a long update promise. In today's technology-driven world, a device that receives regular updates is invaluable. Given my previous positive experience with the iPhone, I was surprised to discover that many well-known Android manufacturers like Xiaomi, HTC, Motorola, and even Google itself (e.g. with its Pixel 7a) cannot keep up here. Samsung stands out as an exception with a 4-year update promiseand the Galaxy A54 5G was also within my budget.

Samsung Galaxy A54 5G: solid price-performance ratio

It brings a wealth of features that are usually only found in more expensive models. Still, there are some notable compromises to be made. On the plus side are things like the 5G support, a 120 Hz display as well as a Multi-SIM slot with microSD card function and eSIM supportwhich provides enough equipment for the next four years. The minus points are the lack of super-fast charging (25 watts are possible after all) and a strong camera. The case design does not use an excessive amount of metal either, but this has the advantage that the device is lighter.

Simple and solid: design and workmanship

In terms of design, Samsung has opted for a minimalist aesthetic. The Galaxy A54 5G is sleek and unobtrusive, which some users might find boring. It lacks the premium flair that more expensive models offer, but that does not mean the smartphone looks cheap. It feels sturdy and is well-made, but it does not use the latest generation display glass, for example, but Cornings gorilla glass 5.

The performance: Sufficient for everyday use

The Galaxy A54 5G offers decent performance for everyday tasks. However, more demanding apps and games can occasionally cause lags. 8 GB of RAM is sufficient, and although the pure CPU performance cannot keep up with high-end devices, the smartphone handles most tasks without problems. Users who mainly look at social media feeds, websites and emails will not notice the weaker CPU negatively; games lack graphics performance.

The camera: Good enough for everyday use

The camera of the Galaxy A54 5G is reliable and can take sharp photos in good lighting conditions. It cannot keep up with the quality of the cameras in the Google Pixel 7a or iPhone 14, but it is more than sufficient for snapshots and social media use.

This is an important criterion for users who want to use their smartphone for a longer period of time. Samsung also relies on its own interface One UI 5However, the user's own launcher can also be used. However, there are no additional features like in the Pixel.

Verdict: A solid all-rounder for the price-conscious
