FreeNAS 9.1.0 BETA released

The FreeNAS-Team has released a new BETA version of the free NAS software based on FreeBSD, FreeNAS 9.1.0-BETA. This version is based on FreeBSD 9.1.0-STABLE and brings several new features, among others that the plugin jail no longer needs to be downloaded separately. Other improvements:

  • ZFS file system improvements (TRIM support, feature flags, etc.)
  • Improved plugin jail system, which now supports multiple plugin jails
  • Better interface for the volume manager and automatic performance improvement of the volumes
  • Encryption improvements

The installation size has increased to just under 4 gigabytes (a 4 GB USB stick should be sufficient, but a GUI upgrade is not possible). Due to the new ZFS version it is also not possible to switch back to the old version after a filesystem upgrade - this should be kept in mind when trying out the beta.

The Download the installation image from the FreeNAS website possible. Since this is a BETA, FreeNAS 9.1.0 should not be used with real data at the moment, but should only be tried out on a test system.
