Joshua Parker Ruehlig, a member of the FreeNAS Forum, has released several new plugins for FreeNAS 8.2.0 and later that work in the plugin jail of a FreeNAS installation. The following Plugins can downloaded (free of charge, installation and use at your own risk):
- headphones, music download for SABnzbd
- games, video game download for SABnzbd
- lazylibrarian, eBook Downloading
- sabnzbd, Usenet automation
- sickbeard, Internet PVR for TV show
- maraschino, an XBMC frontend
- couchpotato
Most of these plugins for FreeNAS are aimed at downloading content from newsgroups - copyright-protected material should of course not be obtained about this. In any case, you can use them to enhance the functionality of your FreeNAS installation. I have found something similar for a High-end HTPC the luxury version compared to a Android TV box like the ATV1200who is doing her job with XBMC without any problems.
Update: for FreeNAS 9.1.x is the Plex Media Service as Plugin has been released, which brings another service besides minidlna, which can distribute media in the network.

besides all your plugins, do you actually have a firewall on your NAS such as pfsense?

No, I don't have anything like that going on. I personally don't use all of these plugins either - but I think it doesn't hurt if others know about them 🙂 Everyone has a slightly different purpose for their FreeNAS.
