The smart pad from 1&1 will only be delivered until the end of September, after that 1&1 will offer devices from other manufacturers. 1&1 had ordered 25,000 devices in order to either distribute them free of charge among DSL 16,000 customers or sell them for around 300 Euro.
The smart pad was ordered by 1&1 from the manufacturer before Apple brought the Ipad onto the market and thus triggered a boom on tablets. In the meantime, the Smartpad is no longer really competitive, which is probably why 1&1 decided to take this step.
Exactly which devices will be issued to customers by 1&1 in the future is still open.
